The city of Santa Maria de Dota in Costa Rica is a rudimentary Tico town spread out around the church, plaza, and school. Secluded hillside villas with breathtaking mountain views are scattered around the area and are a superb option for those wishing to connect to the natural environment. Santa Maria de Dota is a shining example of "Old World" Costa Rica, where everyone greets you on the street.

Also known as Zona Santa, or Los Santos Zone, this region of redolent coffee plantations and cool cloud forests is noÂt exactly a destination, but rather a collection of highland villages at the heart of relaxed, rural Costa Rica. They famously bear sainted names: San Pablo de Leon Cortes, Santa Maria de Dota, San Marcos de Tarrazu, San Cristobal Sur, San Gerardo de Dota.

Birders flock to this area, no pun intended. The area around San Gerardo de Dota and the Cerro de la Muerte, especially, are famed for attracting high-altitude species. The elusive quetzal is such a celebrity in these parts that they named a national park after him ÂCosta Ricas newest Parque Nacional Los Quetzales.
The Quetzal National Park is over 5000 hectares (12,350 acres) in size. And encompasses three types of rain forests and 14 ecosystems. Dota also contains Los Santos Forest Reserve, Paramo Wildlife Refuge and Cerro Las Vueltas Biological Reserve. So bird watchers and nature lover, feel free to give us a call to look at properties for sale in the Los Santos area.
Another important reason to look at Los Santos real estate is that the climate in this area is nothing short of amazing! Being close to the continental divide, the air currents from the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean interact such that the area receives more sun and less rain than many of the surrounding areas. And, being at an elevation of about 6,000 feet, the area always enjoys a Spring-like climate year-round (being so close to the equator, there is very little temperature variation throughout the year here). The temperatures generally range from about 75º during the day to 57º at night...year-round. But the natural beauty alone is enough of an attraction.
Nature enthusiasts will marvel at the plethora of hummingbird and woodpeckers, whose buzzing and hard labor fills the forest air. Around 200 bird species inhabit the misty forests, including tanagers and of course, resplendent quetzals, who mate during the first months of the year. Also, peccaries and coyotes scurry around the beautiful, dense forests full of moss covered oaks and tropical plant species. Innumerable insect species populate these marvelous ecosystems that await you.
Anglers will be delighted to know that trout fishing on the Savegre River (Rio Savegre) and nearby area is a popular hobby.
The wild Savegre flows into the Pacific Ocean, south of Manuel Antonio National Park, which can be reached as a day trip. Other delightful activities include ATV tours to the compelling Naranjo Waterfalls and coffee tours which conclude with a mandatory taste test.
The majority of the people living in Los Santos live from agriculture. Small farms dot the mountainsides growing all sorts of crops from lettuce, potatoes, broccoli, mustard, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and much more. You can find apple, peach, plum and avocado orchards. Blackberries, raspberries and even blueberries grow both wild and are cultivated. Dairy farms are spread throughout the area. Fresh cheese is made daily in many households. Dota Coffee is renown across the planet and large coffee plantations are seen along the roadside everywhere.
