Traveling Around in Costa Rica: Map of San José

Traveling around in Costa Rica

When traveling around to check out real estate in Costa Rica or to decide on a place to live, there are several transportation options to get you around.

Public Transportation in Costa Rica

Public transportation is reliable and affordable and there are buses to almost every part of the country. Some remote towns may be accessed by only one bus a day, but it is possible to get there. Many bus tickets can be purchased in advance and busses often fill up on weekends and holidays. San Jose is the hub of public transportation in Costa Rica and one usually passes through there when going between different regions of the country.

Car Rental in Costa Rica

Driving around Costa Rica is generally not a problem outside of San Jose, and allows you to stop and see some out-of-the-way places that might otherwise be missed. However, driving and parking in San Jose is a headache in terms of the recklessness of other drivers, the confusion of navigating the many one-way streets, and the scarcity of road signs.

Outside of San Jose, driving is much simpler because there are only a few major highways and once you are one your way, it's easy to stay on your route. Some of the mountain roads are a little hazardous because of the Costa Rican habit of passing on blind corners and the presence of large trucks on small roads. Driving at night is not recommended because of the lack of street lights and well-marked lanes and the pedestrians, bicycles, cows, etc. that share the road.

Domestic Flights in Costa Rica

There are several domestic airlines serving the little airports that are spread out around the country at the popular tourist sights like Liberia, Tamarindo, La Fortuna/Arenal, Quepos/Manuel Antonio, Golfito, Drake Bay, Nosara, etc. Flying is a good alternative to get around the country quickly and a car is not usually needed once you arrive at your destination.
